2D Animation

During my time working as a 2D + 3D animator for Aaron Rhyne Designs, I had the great opportunity to create illustrations and animations for Disney Cruises.

I designed a collection of individual animations that were used as loops on the screens, showing each acitvity on the ship.

The Challenge

My goal was to turn the static 2D graphics into 2D animations that were on a constant loop. These animations were to be displayed on screens around the cruise ship, each signaling a different kind of activity for various guests.

My Role

I was the animator for this project, working to isolate each asset and layer within Illustrator, and then combining and animating them within AfterEffects.

Solution:

I had strict guidelines and timeframes for these animations so this was a test of time and pressure. By maintaining clear and consistent communication with my manager and the client, I was able to effeciently create multiple 2D animations within a tight turnaround—even having enough time for 2 rounds of revisions.

Design

Match Your Matey

A pirate themed activity targeted for children who want to interact with their peers on the ship.

Nursery Rhyme Sing-Along Time

An activity targeted for younger children. Here, children can relax and rest.

Prince Eric’s Boat Races

An activity targeted for all children and young teens. This was a game room surrounding the theme of Prince Eric.

Ursula’s Late-Night Leviathan Club

An activity targeted for adults looking to let loose with music and drinks.

Reflection

With a swift turnaround needed for these animations, there was barely anytime for feedback or meetings. Luckily, because the animations were simple and looped, I just had to design as fast as possible. Despite having to create simple animations with no creative freedom, the repetitiveness and structure to the project was enjoyable. It was a great experience working for Disney as a third-party designer and its was very fulfilling as my deisgns would have been viewed by the passengers aboard their ships.
